First Reading · Daniel 7:13-14

13I beheld, therefore, in the vision of the night, and lo, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and he came even to the ancient of days: and they presented him before him.14And he gave him power, and glory, and a kingdom: and all peoples, tribes, and tongues shall serve him: his power is an everlasting power that shall not be taken away: and his kingdom that shall not be destroyed.

commentary

Daniel sees the figure in "the vision of the night," and the wording is careful: "one like the Son of man" (v. 13). He comes "with the clouds of heaven," and the movement runs toward "the ancient of days," before whom "they presented him." Everything in v. 14 is then given rather than seized: "he gave him power, and glory, and a kingdom." The verse piles up the terms of permanence, an "everlasting power that shall not be taken away" and a kingdom "that shall not be destroyed," and widens the realm to "all peoples, tribes, and tongues."

Haydock's notes hold two readings together. Calmet observes that Christ appeared about sixty years after the subversion of the Syrian monarchy, and yet he insists that the expressions "literally refer to his second coming," pointing to Matthew xxvi. 64. Menochius dwells on the phrase "like the Son of man" and explains that he had the form of man, as he had the nature. Worthington says the figure "is clearly predicted," and that "by his power antichrist is overthrown." On v. 14 Calmet judges that the eternal dominion of Christ "could not be expressed in stronger terms," and hears an allusion to it in Matthew xxviii. 18. The reading draws its weight from Calmet's double reference. A kingdom is already conferred in the presence of the Ancient of Days, and a coming on the clouds is still awaited, and the same figure stands at the centre of both, receiving from another what no power on earth can take away from him.
