First Reading · Jeremiah 33:14-16

14Behold the days come, saith the Lord, that I will perform the good word that I have spoken to the house of Israel, and to the house of Juda.15In those days, and at that time, I will make the bud of justice to spring forth unto David, and he shall do judgment and justice in the earth.16In those days shall Juda be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell securely: and this is the name that they shall call him, The Lord our just one.

commentary

The promise looks back to a word already given, "I will perform the good word that I have spoken" (v. 14). What God performs is a growth, "the bud of justice" made "to spring forth unto David" (v. 15), and the oracle ends on a name, "The Lord our just one" (v. 16). Haydock records that the Douay's bud can also be rendered orient, and that the pronoun in v. 16 is itself disputed. The Septuagint and the Chaldean read "they shall call him," but the Hebrew has "her," so that the name would belong to Jerusalem. Haydock points to the parallel oracle in chapter xxiii. 5, "where all read him."

Calmet identifies the bud as Christ. Theodoret sees Zorobabel as his figure, but Calmet answers that not everything in v. 16 can be verified of Zorobabel, and Calovius notes that the Jews themselves explain the passage of the Messias. Worthington grounds it in the line of descent, reading the bud as Christ "as he was born of David, whose posterity should continue till Christ, the founder of an eternal kingdom." The disputed pronoun loses nothing on this reading. If the Hebrew's "her" stands, Calmet reads it of Jerusalem or the Church, "which receives all its beauty from Christ," and the city is called by the just one's name because its justice is his. A Church, or a soul, that claims a justice of its own has misread the oracle; the name it bears is borrowed, The Lord our just one, first spoken of the bud that springs forth unto David.
